Mrs. Ruby Lee Jones was born on December 13, 1927, in Jefferson County, Mississippi, to the late David and Emma Gaines. She was raised in the Poplar Hill community and attended grade school at Poplar Hill School.
She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and became a devoted member of Poplar Hill A.M.E. Church, where she faithfully served as a Mother of the Church. In 1940, she joined the Heroines of Jericho, an organization that held deep meaning for her throughout her life.
In 1943, she met and married the love of her life, Q.C. Jones, Sr. Shortly after their marriage, he was called to serve in World War II. During his time in the military, Ruby resided with his parents, Effie and A.D. Jones. During her husband’s service, Ruby displayed strength and grace, supporting her family and embracing her role as a daughter-in-law with love and dedication.
Upon his return from military service, they began building their family together. Ruby often reflected fondly on those early years of marriage, recalling how she supported her husband’s work hauling pulpwood—making sure his hard-earned wages made it safely home every Friday evening.
She loved attending church and lifting her voice in praise to the Lord. Her home was often filled with the sound of sermons and gospel music, creating an atmosphere of faith and peace. Ruby was a devoted daughter, a loving mother, and a loyal friend.
