Honorable Judge Daniel Lucas Obituary

PORT GIBSON, MS:  Funeral services for the Honorable Judge Daniel E. Lucas, 75, who died on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at his resident, will be held at 11a.m., Saturday, May 25, 2024, at the Port Gibson High School Gymnasium with Rev. James Jones officiating.  Burial will be in the Lucas Family Cemetery with Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. in charge of the arrangements.  Family hour along with the Masonic ceremony will be held at 6:00p.m., Thursday, May 23, 2024 at Campbell Chapel M.B. Church, 2003 Old Highway 61N., Port Gibson, MS 39150.  Public Visitation will be held Friday, May 24, 2024 from 1p.m. until 5p.m. at the Thompson Funeral Home Chapel and Saturday, from 10a.m. until service time at the gymnasium.

Judge Daniel E. Lucas was the eighth child born to the late Willie Lucas, Sr. and the late Maggie Gibson Lucas. He had seven (7) brothers (two (2) deceased) and one (1) sister (deceased).  His  formal years of education were at the Midway School.  He later attended Addison High School graduating in 1966.  He did further studies at Utica Junior College.  He joined in holy matrimony with the former, Geneva Obie on January 13, 1968. They were the parents of four children: Daniel Lucas, Jr. (deceased), Gwendolyn, Bryant Sr., and Martellis Lucas (deceased); grandparent to Danuell Lucas, Sr., Bryant Lucas, Jr., MaKiyra Lucas, Ka’Myah Lucas, MaRiyah Green and great grandparent to Danuell Lucas, Jr., Amoire’ Lucas and Konnor Lucas.

Judge Lucas was a faithful and dedicated member of Campbell Chapel Church, where he has served on the deacon board for over 50 years, chairman for over 40 years and chairman of the     Trustees Board.  He was affiliated with several organizations including New Zion Lodge #161; Anderson Royal Arch #40; Jobs Knight Templar #16; Port Heron Chapter #91 OES; MS Justice Court Judges Association; President, Claiborne County Burial Department; President, Willows Neighborhood Watch; and Vice-President, Claiborne County Baptist Aid. He has been awarded various certificates and honors for his undying love and service to his community including Master Mason of the Year in 1990.

Judge Lucas was appointed to the position of Deputy Sheriff by then Sheriff Dan McCay in July 1978 and continued under Sheriff Frank Davis, honestly serving, and protecting the citizens of Claiborne County.  Judge Lucas wore many hats, Lineman at Port Gibson Electric, Lineman at Cooper Lightning, Gasman for Amoco Corporation and Segrest Gas Co., School Bus Driver for Claiborne County Public Schools and Owner and Operator of Lucas Farms. In 1983, Judge Lucas decided he could better serve his county and community in another position.  He turned his livelihood over to the citizens of Claiborne County and in November 1983, he was elected the first black Justice Court Judge of the Eastern District since reconstruction. After taking office in January 1984, Judge Lucas developed new ways to serve the citizens of Claiborne County with fairness.  He completed over three hundred and sixty (360) hours of judicial training through the University of Mississippi Judicial College and served as a mentor to newly elected judges throughout the state of Mississippi. Judge Lucas had a vast knowledge of preserving law and order. Judge Lucas retired in December 2015 after serving over 30 years being one of the longest tenure judges in the state of Mississippi.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Ruth Starks, brothers, J. W. Lucas and Leroy Curry, sons, Daniel Lucas, Jr. and Martellis Lucas.

He leaves to cherish his forever memories is his wife of 56 years, Geneva Lucas; daughter, Dr. Gwendolyn L. Gordon and spouse Earl; son, Bryant Lucas, Sr. and spouse Frances; grandchildren, Danuell Lucas, Sr. (whom he raised and his name sake) and his spouse Akiyah, Bryant Lucas, Jr., MaKiyra Lucas, Ka’Myah Lucas, MaRiyah Green and great grandchildren, Danuell Lucas, Jr., Amoire’ Lucas and Konnor Lucas; brothers, Joe Lucas and spouse Loretta of Markham, Illinois, Tom Lucas of Chicago, Illinois, James Lucas and spouse Ruby of Chicago, Illinois, Willie Lucas and spouse Grace of Hillside, Illinois and Marvin Lucas, Sr. and spouse Zandra of Port Gibson, Mississippi; brother and sister-in-laws, Katie Marbra and spouse Lemuel; John Obie and spouse Greta, Shellie Obie, Herbert Obie and spouse Flora, Tom Obie and spouse Linda, Loretta Hills all of Hermanville, Mississippi and Donnie Obie of Fort Worth, Texas; special nephew he raised, LaKeith Hills and goddaughter, Katina Runnels. He also leaves a plethora of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends including George Mobley, Lee Andrew Howard, Leroy Smith, Gibson family, Davis family, Smith family, and Barnes family.
